'Sunshine vitamin' helps beat cancer

Milk fortified with vitamin D can make our bones not only stronger but also prevent heart disease and cancer, a new study says.

In colder countries with poor or erratic sunshine, half the population is likely to be low in the 'sunshine vitamin'.




The vitamin is vital for calcium absorption and bone health and may help to prevent Alzheimer's, reports the Daily Mail.

Vitamin D-rich foods include oily fish and eggs but with 90 percent coming from the action of sunlight on the skin there are concerns that advice on abstaining from sunbathing is unnecessarily restrictive.

Recent research has shown that vitamin D supplements are as good as some drugs at keeping prostate cancer under control.

It is also being said that taking vitamin D supplements in pregnancy and childhood could wipe out 80 percent of cases of multiple sclerosis.

Susan Lanham-New, the member of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition and Surrey University nutritionist, said a study of 14,000 pregnant women in Bristol during the 1990s found that more than 90 percent of them were not getting enough of the vitamin.

She said: "Vitamin D is known to be vital for a wide range of body functions. A lot of us are very worried about (deficiencies) and think it needs looking at."

Easy chairs bring change of heart

Our sense of touch has a significant bearing on our thoughts, behaviour and our overall perception of the world, new research reveals.

For the study, a Yale-led team of psychologists conducted a series of six experiments that have been documented in the June 25 issue of the journal Science.




Interviewers holding a heavy clipboard, compared to a light one, thought job applicants took their work more seriously. Subjects who read a passage about an interaction between two people were more likely to characterize it as adversarial if they had first handled rough jigsaw puzzle pieces, compared to smooth ones. And people sitting in hard, cushionless chairs were less willing to compromise in price negotiations than people who sat in soft, comfortable chairs.

"It is behavioral priming through the seat of the pants," said John A. Bargh of Yale, co-author of the paper along with former Yale researchers Joshua M. Ackerman, now of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Christopher C. Nocera of Harvard.

The work builds upon Bargh's 2008 study with Yale Ph.D. student Lawrence Williams, now of the University of Colorado, which found that people judge other people to be more generous and caring after they had briefly held a warm cup of coffee, rather than a cold drink.

Bargh said: "The old concepts of mind-body dualism are turning out not to be true at all. Our minds are deeply and organically linked to our bodies."

Bargh notes that physical concepts such as roughness, hardness, and warmth are among the first that infants develop. They are critical to how young children and adults eventually develop abstract concepts about people and relationships, such as discerning the meaning of a warm smile or a hard heart, he said.

Many More Youngsters Opting for Cosmetic Surgery

Ajay Kashyap, Cosmetic Surgeon at Apollo Hospital, revealed that he was seeing younger patients in high numbers these days. “I have seen a huge increase in the number of cosmetic surgery cases. Four years back, I had rounded about 80 cases, but now it is 120 cases a year,” he said.



The pressure to look good and thrive in friends ‘circle is a trigger for this rise in the number of teens opting to go under the knife to get that perfect nose or that perfect chin.

“Youngsters these days don’t mind going under the knife. All they want is the desired look. This trend catches up before the new session in college begins,” Dr Kashyap agreed.

Furthermore the plethora of television channels popularizes a particular look and teens want to appear like their favorite Bollywood star or cricketer and they do not mind shelling out Rs.60, 000 and Rs.100, 000 for the same.

However experts have cautioned that it is not advisable to go for cosmetic surgery so early in life.

Radiotherapy for breast cancer cut down to 30 minutes

Radiotherapy no longer will be a lengthy procedure to treat breast cancer. Now the patients can take a dose for 30 minutes only, instead of present regime of over six weeks.



British doctors has tested a new technique to blast the tumour inside the breast by just one shot tat will last for half an hour. The research team, having an Indian Dr, Jayant S Vaidya as well, treated some areas affected by cancer with radiation. But they focus only on the tumour rather than the whole breast, as is the way of treatment today.
This treatment was on trial for 10 years in nine countries and was tested on over 2,200 women. It has proved that instead of whole of the breast radiation, targeting of a specific area is much more result oriented and effective through radiation treatment.
